چکیده

Is time-varying firm-level uncertainty a major cause or amplifier of the business cycle? This paper investigates this question in the context of a heterogeneous-firm RBC model with persistent firm-level productivity shocks and lumpy capital adjustment, where cyclical changes in uncertainty correspond naturally to cyclical changes in the cross-sectional dispersion of firm-specific Solow residual innovations. We use a German firm-level data set to investigate the extent to which firm-level uncertainty varies over the cycle. This allows us to put empirical discipline on our numerical simulations. We find that, while firm-level uncertainty is indeed countercyclical, it does not fluctuate enough to significantly alter the dynamics of an RBC model with only first moment shocks. The mild changes we do find are mainly caused by a bad news effect: higher uncertainty today predicts lower aggregate Solow residuals tomorrow. This effect dominates the real option value effect of time-varying uncertainty, highlighted in the literature. JEL Codes: E20, E22, E30, E32.

The Importance of Reallocation in Cyclical Productivity and Returns to Scale: Evidence from Plant-level Data

This paper provides new evidence that estimates obtained from aggregated data may not provide reliable estimates of average firm-level parameters, if the composition of producers with different levels of productivity changes over the business cycle. I examine plant-level data and show that, due to the countercyclical reallocation of output among heterogenous plants, productivity measures based ...

Inventory investment and aggregate fluctuations with idiosyncratic shocks

We develop a DSGE model to explain salient empirical regularities regarding fluctuations in aggregate inventory accumulation over the business cycle while simultaneously explaining a distinct set of observations on the behavior of this series at higher frequencies. We begin with a generalized (S,s) model of inventory investment wherein firms fixed costs of ordering inputs that lead them to econ...

in Economics : 1556 LARGE FIRM DYNAMICS AND THE BUSINESS CYCLE

Do large firm dynamics drive the business cycle? We answer this question by developing a quantitative theory of aggregate fluctuations caused by firm-level disturbances alone. We show that a standard heterogeneous firm dynamics setup already contains in it a theory of the business cycle, without appealing to aggregate shocks. We offer a complete analytical characterization of the law of motion ...

Firm Volatility and Credit: A Macroeconomic Analysis

This paper examines a tractable real business cycle model with idiosyncratic productivity shocks and binding credit constraints on entrepreneurs. The model shows how firm volatility increases in combination with credit market development. It further generates the observed comovement of credit and firm volatility with output at business cycle frequencies in response to aggregate productivity sho...

Fluctuations in R&D Investment and Long-run Growth: The Role of the Size Distribution of Innovating Firms

R&D investment drives productivity growth. Therefore, its uctuations over the business cycle a ect long-run dynamics. I show that taking into account the size distribution of innovating rms generates new insights on this link. I write an endogenous growth model with heterogeneous rms assuming, in line with empirical evidence, that small rms have a relatively higher innovation capacity than larg...
